Top 10 Motivational Books that will improve your productivity

A person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't
Mark Twain

A room without a book is like a body without a soul. The importance of reading good books can never be quantified in any terms we know. There are books you merely open and skim through; there are others you read and shake your head; whereas there are ones you read, digest, 'regurgitate' and read all over again.

I think to stay inspired, these books should be read, digested and reread. You can get them at your local bookstores or online, and in any format of your choice. The most important thing is laying your hands on them and mining the inherent treasures.

So, in no particular order, the following are the top ten inspirational books you need to look out for to increase your productivity. Please ensure you read at least one this week and feel free to add to the list. Happy reading in advance :)  Continue...

How Nigeria Defeated the Ebola Scourge (2)

Photo-courtesy: Doctors Without Borders
Here is the concluding part of the story on how Nigeria overcame Ebola virus disease as I promised…
The WHO puts the fatality rate at 70 per cent but in Nigeria it was less than 40 per cent. The public health expert explained: “Actually, the case fatality rate in the Nigeria outbreak was 40 per cent. This means that 40 per cent of those who developed the disease died in Nigeria. This proportion includes the index case that arrived  in  Nigeria with already advanced Ebola disease.
“Clearly, the patients in Nigeria were given the best level of care possible. We had Ebola case management experts from  WHO working with our equally qualified Nigerian medical doctors, nurses and other health care workers. They provided the highest level of clinical care to EVD patients round the clock. As you are aware, treatment of EVD is mainly supportive. However, the quality of this supportive care does determine the trajectory of the disease.
“Furthermore, the chances of survival from the disease improve when a patient is able to report early to a treatment centre. So once an individual knows they have been exposed to the disease and develop symptoms, they should seek urgent medical care by calling the Ebola help hotline (0800-EBOLA-HELP).” Continue...

Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.

Samuel Johnson

We came into the world in different sizes, shapes and destinies. This is the reason why each person’s experience is quite peculiar to him. The Creator had destined that we would be brought out from the wombs that gave birth to us. Left for some people, they would have prayed to be borne by a family that has the wherewithal to provide for all the necessities of life, while others would say, “Oh! I wish I was born in America” and some have gone to the length of cursing their fate as Nigerians, forgetting that there are beggars even on the streets of America. Continue...

How Nigeria Defeated the Ebola Scourge

How Nigeria tackled the Ebola virus outbreak

The World Health Organization recently declared Nigeria an Ebola-free territory. In this report by Guardian, we will be looking at how the country was able to overcome the scourge.

We must commend the efforts of those medical personnel on ground, who showed high level of professionalism, and in the process endangered their lives, to avert what could have become a major national disaster.

I do not forgot in a hurry many prescriptions by those who became ‘doctors’ overnight such as bathing with water laden with salt and making a meal of kolanut. Thank God for the happy ending, but as the epidemic is still ravaging some neighbouring countries, we must not rest on our oars by maintaining a hygienic environment.

So let’s look at the report after the cut…

First Class, 2.1, 3rd Class or Pass: The Choice is Yours

How to succeed academically (inspirational writeup)
Yes, I have thought of this for a long time now. I think it’s time to interact with my friends in tertiary institutions: universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, ‘battling’ to get their 1st degree. Life, somebody once said, is warfare. In a war situation, a military contingent has to marshal out the relevant weapons within its armoury to win a battle. Life as a student is similar to the picture being painted here. You need to know what the situation demands and apply the necessary tools in achieving your goals. Continue...

Nigeria: Home of 10.5m out-of-school children, 63m illiterate adults?

Photo-courtesy of Daily Sun online

This is an alarming headline! I wanted to overlook this when I first saw it, but it was quite ‘un-overlookable’, that might be un-English but has helped in describing my dilemma. So let's look at it together.

What sort of society are we building if 63 million adults, capable of constituting three separate countries are illiterates? Whether this statistics is correct or not, I don’t know; but we have grown to be a country where people place much emphasis on physical cash than the intangible wealth, knowledge. Continue...

Can We Afford to Destroy Our Environment?

A clean environment is every city's pride. Mega cities around the world are synonymous with neat and sparkling surroundings. And we can achieve the mega city status of our dream if we resolve to maintain cleanliness in our homes, places of work, schools, hospitals and every other place we find ourselves. We need to do this because we have no other environment to call our own if we degrade this one.

It still baffles me to see some people eat stuffs in buses and throw them on the road not minding the environmental hazards such acts can cause. Please when you finish eating Gala or anything in a bus or private vehicle, wrap and drop them in the bus or better still put them in a basket, if the driver has one. It is the duty of the driver to dispose the dirt at the appropriate place. Continue...

THE STORY OF A TRAMP

Inspirational story of a tramp
A tramp: Photocourtesy of The Workhouse
I once read a story of a tramp in a certain city, who went from one place to another begging for alms. And quite unfortunately this treasure, sewn in the inner pocket of his cloak by the original owner, went undiscovered until his death...

Readers are Champions

The importance of reading

“You're the same today as you'll be in five years except for the people you meet and the books you read.”

-Charlie Jones

When was the last time you read a book related to the career you are pursuing or just to improve yourself? Results of various observations show that most graduates in the country scarcely read once they ‘drop’ their pens. Even at school, most of us just read to pass our exams and in the process crammed and stuffed everything into our memories till the overburdened heads started crying for mercy… lol.

Thank you for being there for me

Reflections for the 54th independence anniversary

Fellow Nigerian youths, it was a thing of joy and ecstasy to witness another independence anniversary. Nigeria turned + 1 yesterday :). Since childhood, we’re all used to the pump and pageantry that goes with the marking of our independence anniversary every 1st October. Beautiful scenes of march pasts and songs by school children of various ages usually adorn the occasion.
