Things are not what they seem: the parable of a Chinese farmer

Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer whose horse ran away. All the neighbours came around to commiserate with him that evening, “So sorry that your horse has run away, that’s too bad.” and he said, “Maybe or maybe not.”

The next day the horse came back, bringing seven wild horses with it. Everyone came around in the evening and said, “Oh isn’t that lucky, what a great turn of events, you’ve now got eight horses.” and he said, “Maybe or maybe not.”

The next day his son tried to break one of the horses and ride it, but was thrown off and ended up breaking his leg. They all said, “Oh dear that’s too bad.” and he said, “Maybe or maybe not.”

The following day the conscription officers came around to recruit, or to force people into the army because they were at war with a neighbouring city, but they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. Many died in that war, his only son could have been one of them. All the people came around and said, “That’s great.” and he said, “Maybe or maybe not.”
Things are not what they seem. What you call misfortune today could be a way God is using to reposition you for better things.

At the end of my NYSC program in 2010, I was given an automatic appointment in the state where I served; however, they treacherously refused to honour their promise after delaying me for 9 months, I never worried, I never despaired. I simply believed God would provide a better place for me. The rest, they say, is history.

The stark truth is, my current location cannot be compared with the state where I was initially disappointed. So I tell you never give up on yourself even when it seems your whole world is turning upside down. See your challenges as blessings in disguise. And in no time, you will sing a victory song.

I leave you with this Scripture, "All things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are called according to His purpose".
